Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs, Olta Xhaçka, participated in the launching of the Declaration against Arbitrary Detention in State-to-State Relations, by the invitation of the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Canada.
In her remarks, Minister Xhaçka reiterated Albania’s support for this statement, as she considered unacceptable the increase in the number of arbitrary detentions of innocent foreign nationals by governments, which according to her, want to use them as a means of negotiation in their relations with the governments and countries of origin of detainees.
“We must send a clear message to all those who consider the arbitrary detention of foreign nationals as a tool for foreign policy, that such actions have a price and this price is not insignificant, but “a stain on the reputation and image of those involved in such actions,” she said.
Chief diplomat Xhaçka congratulated Canada for this initiative, calling this declaration an important step in the fight against arbitrary detentions in state to state relations. The conference was greeted by high official representatives from around the world, the European diplomacy as well as influential Canadian personalities in the political, social and cultural life.
