Minister of Foreign Affairs Ditmir Bushati attended the Conference on Afghanistan, held in Brussels on October 5, 2016.
This high-level meeting was attended by over 67 countries, including countries of our region and the EU, and around 25 organizations and important international agencies.
The conference was co-organized by the EU and the Afghan government, with a view to continue the current political and financial support for Afghanistan from partner countries until 2020.
Following the commitments undertaken at the NATO Summit in Warsaw, Albania will double its military presence in the framework of the NATO Resolute Support training mission, which aims to complete the stabilization process and eliminate any risk for Afghanistan to go back to being a haven for international terrorism.
In his address, Minister Bushati expressed Albania's support for the peace process and national reconciliation in Afghanistan and the efforts of local authorities to guarantee security in the country, so that the progress achieved over the last decade and the long-term investment of the international community be irreversible.
Minister Bushati stated that "As a NATO member and in compliance with EU policies, as a candidate country, Albania will continue to remain in Afghanistan for as long as it’s necessary".
The Brussels Conference encouraged the Afghan Government of National Reconciliation to continue on the path of reforms, by conditioning the continuation of financial support for this country with tangible progress on the fight against corruption and respect for human rights, particularly those of women and children.
