#WeAreNATO - Special Meeting of NATO Heads of States and Governments

On the 25th of May 2017 was held in Brussels the special meeting of NATO Heads of States and Government, in which Albania was represented with a delegation headed by Prime Minister Edi Rama, accompanied by Ministers Bushati and Kodheli.

The main axes of this special Summit, organized in the framework of the first visit of the US President Trump to NATO, were confirmation of the strong Trans-Atlantic bond, a fairer share of responsibility for increasing the defense budget within a decade to 2% of GDP, as well as the fight against terrorism and NATO's role in this regard.

Following President Trump's explicit appeal for “more efficiency in the fight against terrorism”, NATO allies decided to join the anti-ISIL Coalition.

Leaders also agreed that in order to meet all the challenges that the Euro-Atlantic security is facing today a fairer division of the financial burden of the alliance is needed.

Following the commitments made at the Wales Summit and confirmed at the Warsaw Summit, Albania has increased defense budget and investments in capacity building.

During the discussions, Prime Minister Rama underscored that besides the commitment to implement a progressive plan for achieving budget targets, the Brussels Summit finds Albania with doubled contributions to Kosovo (KFOR) as well as at the Resolute Support mission in Afghanistan, with patrol boats in the NATO Aegean Operation helping Greece and Turkey to fight migrant trafficking, and soon, with our military contingent which will be deployed to Latvia under the Canadian command.

While the Western Balkans region remains of strategic importance for NATO, and under the pressure of the third actors, “the Alliance’s attention should remain high and its commitment concrete, in support of peace and security as well as advancing Euro-Atlantic integration of aspirant countries”, Prime Minister Rama highlighted.

The allies' discussions confirmed that NATO remains an unprecedented community of freedom, peace, security and common values, including individual freedom, human rights, democracy and the rule of law and that today more than ever Europe and North America need each other.

During the Summit was inaugurated the new Alliance headquarters as well as two symbolic memorials: that of the Berlin Wall and the memorial of the attacks of September 11, 2001, when, for the first time, Article 5 of the Washington Treaty was implemented.

NATO's new headquarters referred as “a 21st century building for a 21st century Alliance” is designed to resemble interlocking fingers, symbolizing Allied unity and cooperation.
