Brazil and Albania established diplomatic relations on April 4, 1961, and soon signed a Trade and Payments Agreement.
In 1985, the Brazilian government granted approval for the first non-resident ambassador of Albania to Brazil, based in Buenos Aires. That same year, the Brazilian ambassador in Rome was also accredited in Albania.
In September 2008, in Beijing as part of the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games, the Prime Minister of Albania, Sali Berisha, met with the President of Brazil, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva. A year later, Albania and Brazil opened their diplomatic embassies in Brazil and Tirana, with the objective of strengthening the ties of friendship between the two countries, promoting mutual exports and investments, spreading Brazilian culture and increasing artistic and cultural exchanges.
After the 90s, with the change of the political system in Albania, contacts increased at all levels and in areas of mutual interest.
Albania and Brazil enjoy very good relations. Citizens of both countries can visit Albania and Brazil without the need for a visa.
Starting from the 2000s, high-level visits and meetings have been held and a number of important agreements are in progress, including political dialogue and economic cooperation.
Bilateral trade and investment
Brazil is the first trade partner among Latin American countries, with 98% of total Albanian exports to these countries and more than 65% of imports. Bilateral trade has continued to grow, however remaining at modest levels. For the first six months of 2017, imports from Brazil have registered an increase of 22.5% and Albanian exports an increase of more than 142% (dominated by the volume of textiles and leather). Products of animal origin and meat dominate imports from Brazil.
Both countries are interested in promoting cooperation in trade, agriculture, tourism, energy, etc. and a number of initiatives are in process, aimed at completing the legal and institutional framework and establishing direct contacts at different levels and between the actors involved.
