The Human Rights Council is the main intergovernmental body within the United Nations responsible for human rights. Established in 2006 by the General Assembly, it is responsible for strengthening the promotion and protection of human rights around the globe.
International Human Rights Day is celebrated every year on December 10, the date that coincides with December 10, 1948, when the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
Albania was a member of the HRC for the first time in the period 2015-2017, during which it contributed to global commitments on issues such as the rights of national minorities, intolerance, and discrimination, and actively promoted gender equality, the empowerment of women and the rights of groups at risk due to discrimination.
Albania, as a member of NATO and a candidate for the EU, strongly supports the respect of human rights and their universality. Based on these achievements, and the need for the credibility of this body so important for human rights, Albania presented its candidacy to become a member of the Human Rights Council, for the period 2024-2026, in the elections that were held took place at the UN General Assembly in October 2023.
Albania will be a member of the Human Rights Council from January 1, 2024, to December 31, 2026.
