Highlights from the festive ceremony held by the Consulate General of the Republic of Albania in Ioannina, commemorating the 112th anniversary of Albania’s Independence and the 80th anniversary of its Liberation
The event was well-attended, featuring representatives from various authorities, including the Prefecture of Epirus, the Municipality of Ioannina, and the Mayors of Gjirokastra and Dropulli. Senior officials from the Epirus Police, along with members from the business, education, and religious sectors, as well as representatives from tourism, art, sports, journalism, and other well-wishers from both Albania and Greece, were also present
In her speech, Dr. Irida Laçi, the Consul General of Albania in Ioannina, expressed her gratitude to all attendees. She highlighted the friendly relations between Albania and Greece on bilateral, regional, and multilateral fronts, which have elevated their partnership to a strategic level
Dr. Laçi particularly noted the significance of multifaceted cooperation in the framework of the urban diplomacy, which has fostered tangible integration among the people of our regions. For instance, Albanians represent the largest group of tourists in the Epirus region, and over 390 Albanian students are currently enrolled at the University of Ioannina, where there is ongoing academic collaboration between universities in both regions. Moreover, trade exchanges are on the rise, and there is significant cooperation in arts, sports, and an increasing interest in medical tourism.
These developments underscore the idea that city diplomacy serves as a form of pre-diplomacy, with small cities like Ioannina showcasing positive examples of integration and friendship between Albania and Greece
During the ceremony, several Albanian and Greek doctors were honored for their contributions to “medical diplomacy.” The event concluded with a delightful dinner accompanied by traditional Albanian music and dances performed by children in traditional costumes.
