Minister Hasani: “Gratitude for Ireland’s continued support on our EU path”
Tirana, 22 July 2025 – The Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs, H.E. Mr. Igli Hasani, today welcomed the Irish Minister of State for European Affairs and Defence, H.E. Mr. Thomas Byrne, at the premises of the Ministry.
The meeting focused on the progress of the Western Balkans’ European integration process, underlined as an essential dimension for long-term peace and security on the continent.
At the centre of discussions was Albania’s advancement towards EU membership. Minister Hasani reaffirmed the government’s unwavering commitment to pursuing key reforms, stressing that European integration remains a clear national priority.
“We are grateful for Ireland’s steadfast support for the enlargement process and for its concrete backing on our path towards membership. We look forward to deepening our cooperation further during Ireland’s Presidency of the Council of the EU in the second half of 2026,” – Minister Hasani stated.
He underlined that Albania is prepared to open the next negotiating clusters and aims to complete the technical phase of negotiations by 2027, with the objective of joining the Union before the end of the decade.
Minister Hasani also emphasized that Albania remains fully aligned with the EU’s Common Foreign and Security Policy and continues to contribute actively to its civilian and military missions – a significant input to regional and broader security.
The talks further addressed the strengthening of bilateral relations between Albania and Ireland, including the opening of direct flight connections and prospects for increasing Irish investments.
