On November 6, 2024, Albania, represented by Ambassador Eglantina Gjermeni, signed the Country Programme Framework (CPF) for the 2024-2029 period with the Deputy Director General and Head of the Department of Technical Cooperation of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Mr. Hua Liu. This agreement marks an important step in technological cooperation between Albania and the IAEA, outlining priority areas where resources and technology will be invested to support national development goals.
- The document includes four key priority areas identified as significant:
- Nuclear and Radiation Safety,
- Public Health,
- Radioisotopes and Radiation Technology, and
- Food and Agriculture.
By focusing on these areas, the CPF aims to strengthen Albania’s infrastructure and technical capacities in these sectors, contributing to the improvement of safety, health, and the well-being of Albanian citizens.
The 2024-2029 CPF is the result of close collaboration between Albanian institutions and the IAEA. The process was coordinated by the State Agency for Strategic Programming and Aid Coordination (SASPAC) and the IAEA’s Department of Technical Cooperation, with significant contributions from the Institute of Applied Nuclear Physics. The document also received support from several key Albanian ministries, which provided sectoral perspectives to prioritize development areas.
Thanks to the joint efforts of these actors, the CPF serves as a strategic guide for Albania’s sustainable development and strengthens cooperation with the IAEA in essential fields such as nuclear safety, healthcare, radiation technology, and agriculture.
The signing of the CPF is significant as it aligns the IAEA’s cooperation with Albania’s national priorities outlined in the National Strategy for Development and European Integration 2022-2030, as well as with the UN Sustainable Development Goals. Through this document, Albania will benefit from international support in building capacity for radiation management, treating chronic diseases, protecting cultural heritage, and ensuring food safety.
This partnership between Albania and the IAEA reflects a shared commitment to using science and technology as tools for sustainable development, bringing tangible benefits to Albanian society and the economy.
