Statement by H.E. Ms. Eglantina Gjermeni, Ambassador, Permanent Representative
Meeting 1511 of the Permanent Council, 6 March 2025, Vienna
Thank you, Madam Chair,
Excellencies, dear friends,
As we mark International Women’s Day, we honour the vital contributions of women to our societies, economies, and shared future. More than a century ago, in 1908, courageous women took to the streets demanding economic and political rights—laying the foundation for what the UN formally recognized as International Women’s Day in 1977. Since then, nations, including Albania, have worked to turn these aspirations into reality through policies, programs, and reforms that promote gender equality and empower women.
Albania’s progress reflects this commitment. Women now hold 55% of cabinet positions, 35.7% of parliamentary seats, and 44% of municipal council roles, marking a significant shift in political representation. Economic and social empowerment initiatives have expanded opportunities, while stronger legal protections and Referral Mechanisms in every municipality support survivors of gender-based violence. In education, women comprise 58.7% of university students, though digital access gaps remain a challenge, particularly in rural areas.
Yet, obstacles persist—gender pay gaps, discrimination, and violence against women remain pressing issues. Albania is committed to strengthening women’s economic empowerment, expanding access to education, healthcare, and social protection, and ensuring stronger legal and policy frameworks on achieving gender equality in our society.
Colleagues,
As we speak, millions of women endure the horrors of war—forced to flee, facing violence, yet standing as pillars of resilience. They care for families, lead humanitarian efforts, and advocate for peace, often at great personal risk. True peace and security cannot exist without recognizing their strength, protecting their rights, and ensuring their voices are heard in decision-making.
Approaching the 30th anniversary of the Beijing Declaration, we reaffirm its vision—a world where every woman and girl fully exercises her rights, free from discrimination and violence. Gender equality is not just a women’s issue; it is a human rights issue and a foundation of democracy and sustainable development.
A future where every woman and girl can thrive, contribute, and lead as equals is not an aspiration—it is an obligation.
Thank you, Madam Chair!
