On January 28, 2022, Ambassador Dastid KORESHI, Permanent Representative of Albania to the Council of Europe, signed in the office of Bjørn Berge, Deputy Secretary General, the Council of Europe Convention on Access to Official Documents (CETS No. 205), known also as the Tromsø Convention, bringing the number of signatures to 20.
This Convention is the first binding international legal instrument that recognizes the general right of access to official documents held by public authorities. The Treaty constitutes a historic moment in the promotion of democratic governance, openness, participatory democracy and the exercise of other fundamental human rights and freedoms.
Also, Ambassador KORESHI signed the amending Protocol of the Convention for the Protection of Individuals with regard to the Automatic Processing of Personal Data (CETS No. 223), known as Convention 108+, bringing the number of signatures to 44.
This protocol aims to modernize and improve Convention 108, the only binding international instrument of global importance in this field. The Protocol addresses new challenges to the protection of privacy resulting from the use of new information and communication technologies that have emerged since the adoption of the Convention in 1980.
