Albania has been elected for the first time as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council for the period 2022-2023.
Albania was elected a member with the support of 175 UN member countries, while 190 countries participated in the vote. This marks the first time of selection in this function, after 65 years of its membership in the United Nations Organization.
The Security Council of the United Nations Organization is one of the most important bodies of the United Nations Organization, tasked with maintaining peace and security among nations.
Albania, Brazil, Gabon, Ghana and the United Arab Emirates were competing, without competitors from the respective regions, for the 5 seats. To be elected, each of them had to secure two-thirds of the votes of the UN member states.
The candidate countries will replace the five current members: Estonia, Nigeria, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Tunisia and Vietnam. The mandate of the new members begins on January 1, 2022 and will serve until December 31, 2023.
