The city of Osijek hosted the official opening events marking the beginning of the celebrations for Albania’s National Day in Croatia. The activities were organized by the Albanian National Minority Council of Osijek-Baranja County, headed by Basri Haliti.
The Ambassador of Albania to Croatia, Donika Hoxha, participated in the festive program and in a special symposium dedicated to the Congress of Manastir and the importance of the Albanian language in preserving national identity. The event also gathered the Ambassador of the Republic of Kosovo, Martin Berishaj, former Member of the Croatian Parliament representing national minorities, Ermina Lekaj Përljeskaj, and the distinguished professor from North Macedonia, Skënder Hasani. The ceremony was also greeted by the Deputy Mayor of Osijek, reflecting the friendship and support of the local community.
Prior to the main event, Ambassador Hoxha visited the Honorary Consulate of the Republic of Albania in Osijek, where she was welcomed by Honorary Consul Basri Aliti. She also visited the Church of the Holy Cross, home to the bust of Mihail Sumaj — the first archbishop of this region, originally from Shkodra — a symbol of the historical presence of Albanians in this area. Another highlight was the visit to the bust of Mother Teresa, created by a Croatian sculptor and placed in Osijek thanks to the dedication of the Albanian community.
The program concluded with an emotional performance by the children attending the three Albanian-language classes active in Osijek — a vivid demonstration of the community’s commitment to preserving the Albanian language and cultural heritage among younger generations.
The celebrations of Albania’s National Day will continue across various cities in Croatia in the coming days.
