Honorable Minister Vengu,
Honorable General,
Ambassador, fellow diplomats,
Honorable military personnel,
It is a pleasure and a special emotion for me to be here today among you to convey with respect and gratitude the contingent of the Albanian Armed Forces, which will contribute to the EUFOR “ALTHEA” mission in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
As someone who has had the privilege of being part of the Ministry of Defense and working closely with the Armed Forces of our Republic, as someone who has been close to your efforts, sacrifices and dedication, I experience this ceremony with a sense of pride and deep respect for your work and mission.
This commitment is not simply a military duty, but a clear testimony of our unwavering commitment to regional and international security and stability. Our participation in this mission reflects the values that we share with our partners: peace, cooperation and collective security.
Over the years, Albania has built a successful and worthy history in international engagements, as a NATO member state and a reliable partner within the European Union. Our participation in European Union missions, such as EUFOR “ALTHEA” and the one in Mali, has proven the professionalism, discipline and dedication of our Armed Forces. You, through your preparation and capabilities, have earned the respect of our allies and international partners.
Today, this contingent of 30 military personnel, selected among the best of the Armed Forces of the Republic of Albania, is another proof of our readiness and ability to contribute to international security and stability. Through this engagement, we not only strengthen relations with the European Union, but also clearly demonstrate Albania’s role as an important factor of stability in the region.
“ALTHEA” has a special importance for the Western Balkans, playing a key role in the implementation of the Dayton Agreement and in ensuring stability in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Albania’s participation in this mission is not only a contribution to regional peace and security, but also an expression of our country’s full alignment with the European Union’s Common Security and Defence Policy.
I am convinced that this contingent integrated with the company of the Armed Forces of the Republic of Turkey will make a valuable contribution to ensuring a stable and secure environment for the society of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
I remember, more than 20 years ago when Lieutenant General Kingji was the first commander of a mission in Afghanistan, well and strongly integrated with our Turkish brothers, with a contribution that is going on for more than two decades, it is a concrete fact of an excellent cooperation that we have with the Turkish Armed Forces.
Dear friends and colleagues,
Albania’s progress on the path of European integration during 2024 has been historic. Last year, we opened negotiations on key chapters, demonstrating maximum commitment to fulfilling our strategic objectives. The European Commission has expressed its support for our national goal: to conclude negotiations by 2027.
Another achievement was the signing of the Declaration of Partnership in the Field of Defense and Security with the European Union – which your Minister and I signed in December – a historic moment that further strengthens our cooperation with the EU in the field of security and defense. This partnership not only increases our capacities to integrate into European security initiatives, but also clearly demonstrates that Albania is an important and credible factor in the European security architecture.
This year, we intend to continue at the same pace, fulfilling the necessary reforms and strengthening cooperation with the Polish Presidency and other partners of the European Union. This progress is important not only for our path towards EU membership, but also for the stability and sustainable development of our entire region.
And precisely, stability in the Western Balkans remains a top priority for Albania and the European Union. Our contribution to “ALTHEA” is not only a shared responsibility, but also a strategic commitment for a safer and more sustainable future. As I mentioned earlier, this effort reflects the values that we share with our European partners: solidarity, cooperation and shared responsibility for peace and security.
Dear military personnel,
Your mission in Bosnia and Herzegovina is a testament to your commitment and professionalism, making Albania an important factor for international peace and security. You are our ambassadors in uniform and I am sure that you will represent the country with honor and dignity, because you represent not only the Armed Forces of the Republic of Albania, but also our national aspirations and European values.
On behalf of the Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs, I thank you for your sacrifice and continued commitment.
I wish you a successful mission and a safe return to your homeland.
Albania is proud of you and all that you represent.
