In response to the ongoing illegal and reckless attacks by the Houthi group against ships transiting the Red Sea and surrounding waterways, the armed forces of the United States and the United Kingdom, with the support of Australia, Bahrain, Canada and the Netherlands , carried out several other attacks against eight targets in the Houthi-controlled Areas of Yemen in accordance with the inherent right of individual and collective self-defense, in accordance with the UN Charter. These attacks were aimed at disrupting and reducing the ability of the Houthi group to continue their attacks on global trade and innocent seafarers from around the world, avoiding escalation.
The more than 30 attacks the Houthi group has carried out on commercial and naval vessels since mid-November pose a threat to all countries that rely on international shipping. We condemn these attacks and demand their end. We also emphasize that those supplying the Houthi group with weapons to carry out these attacks are violating UN Security Council Resolution 2216 and international law. The international response on January 22 to the continued attacks of the Houthi group showed a common determination to protect the rights and freedoms of navigation and to protect the lives of seafarers from illegal and unjustifiable attacks.
