Albania, as an EU accession candidate and NATO member state, has been and is a valued and trusted partner for the EU in the areas of security and defence, actively contributing to EU Common Security and Defence Policy (CSDP) missions and operations.
The newly adopted Security and Defence Partnership builds on this strong foundation, paving the way for enhanced cooperation in key areas, including crisis management, support to Ukraine, countering hybrid threats, cybersecurity, capacity building and training, counter-terrorism and external aspects of integrated border management.
The EU’s decision in July 2024 to provide €13 million in support to the Albanian Armed Forces under the European Peace Facility was a significant milestone in our security and defence cooperation. It reflects the EU’s appreciation of Albania’s full alignment with the Union’s Common Foreign and Security Policy, which is a very clear expression of Albania’s strategic choice for a future within the EU.
