“Special session on the deteriorating human rights situation in the Islamic Republic of Iran.”
Statement delivered by H.E. Mrs. Vasilika Hysi, Ambassador, Permanent Representative
Geneve, 23 January 2026
Mr. President,
Albania expresses its grave concern regarding the serious and ongoing deterioration of the human rights situation in Iran, particularly in the context of the peaceful protests that began on 28 December 2025.
We strongly deplore the excessive, disproportionate, and lethal use of force against peaceful protesters, resulting in thousands of deaths, mass injuries, and the use of firearms and other prohibited means, in clear violation of international human rights law.
We express our deep concern regarding the widespread arbitrary arrests and detentions, including of children, and the risk of the arbitrary application of the death penalty against recently arrested protesters.
Albania reaffirms the inalienable rights of all Iranians to life, liberty, and security of person, as well as their rights to freedom of expression, association, and peaceful assembly.
Albania stresses the urgent need to ensure accountability and end impunity for serious human rights violations and all crimes under international law.
We strongly support the extension of the mandate of the Independent International Fact-Finding Mission on Iran, as well as the extension of the mandate of the Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Iran, and we support the conduct of an urgent investigation into recent and ongoing violations, including with a view to future judicial proceedings, in accordance with their mandates.
Finally, Albania reiterates its support and solidarity with the Iranian people and its aspirations for full respect for their fundamental freedoms and rights, as well as for a better future.
Thank you.
