Statement by Ms. Vasilika Hysi, Permanent Representative of the Republic of Albania

Mr. President,

Albania thanks the Group of Independent Experts for the presentation of its report, welcomes the thorough work carried out, despite the continued lack of cooperation from the Belarusian authorities, and fully supports the renewal and strengthening of its mandate.

 

The findings of the GIE confirm and expand upon the observations already made during this session: since 2020, the authorities have been pursuing a widespread and systematic campaign of repression targeting anyone perceived as opposed to the Government.

 

We are deeply concerned about the conditions of detention, including documented deaths, which underscore the gravity of the situation and raise serious questions regarding respect for the right to life.

 

The report also highlights new or intensified transnational repression against Belarusians in exile.

 

We note with concern that more than a thousand people remain detained for political reasons and that impunity remains deeply entrenched. We strongly condemn this targeted repression and call on the Government of Belarus to immediately release all political prisoners.

 

Civil society organizations, independent trade unions, the media, and human rights defenders continue to be targeted and face worrying legislative initiatives.

 

Albania reaffirms its solidarity with the Belarusian people in their quest for justice, dignity, the rule of law, and respect for fundamental rights.
