HRC 60: Interactive dialogue on OHCHR’s report on the situation of human rights in Sri Lanka
Geneva, September 8, 2025
Statement delivered by Permanent Mission of Albania
Thank you, Mr. President,
Albania welcomes the comprehensive report presented today on the situation of human rights in Sri Lanka. We commend the High Commissioner and his office for their continued dedication to advancing accountability, reconciliation, and the protection of human rights in Sri Lanka.
We believe that the new Government has a historic opportunity to break with a legacy of impunity and to take a new path grounded in justice, truth and reconciliation. The clear political mandate and public expectations for reform provide a unique moment to address the root causes of past conflict, acknowledge the suffering of victims, and ensure that serious human rights violations are investigated and prosecuted.
Despite pledges made by the Government to repeal the Prevention of Terrorism Act, establishing an independent public prosecutor’s office and investigate emblematic cases, we remain deeply concerned by the persistent patterns of arbitrary detention, custodial deaths, intimidation of civil society, and the continued use of repressive legislation.
We strongly support the recommendations of the OHCHR’s report and call for their swiftly implementation by the authorities. Albania stands in solidarity with the victims and survivors of past violations reiterates its support for a inclusive and peaceful future for all communities in Sri Lanka.
I thank you.
