Human Rights Council
56th session of the Human Rights Council
18 June to 12 July 2024
Statement delivered during theInteractive Dialogue with theSpecial Rapporteur on violence against women and girls, its causes and consequences
Geneva, 24 June 2024
Thank you, Mr. President,
Albania welcomes the report of the Special Rapporteur.
Albania notes with great concern that due to their social and economic situation, women and girls are vulnerable to sexual exploitation.
Albania consistently continues its efforts to provide support and services for women and girls affected by prostitution, including access to shelter, health and psychological care, vocational training, as well as support for their reintegration into society.
Women and girls affected by prostitution may be exposed to various forms of violence, including, physical and psychological violence, isolation, emotional manipulation, and financial control to limit their freedom and autonomy. This type of violence often affects their self-esteem and emotional well-being. To tackle this issue, institutions should provide support and services to women and girls affected.
Additionally, educating society and raising public awareness about the violence experienced by women and girls helps reduce stigma and change the culture that allows sexual exploitation.
Providing counselling including psychological and emotional support is essential to help women and girls cope with the trauma experienced and feel supported in the recovery process. Training and opportunities for education and professional development help women and girls find new employment opportunities and personal growth.
To conclude, I would like to commend the Special Rapporteur for her work and to express our support for the mandate.
Thank you.
