56th Session of the Human Rights Council
Celebration of the International Day of Women in Diplomacy
24 June 2024
Thank you, Mr. President,
I would like to thank you and the Permanent Mission of Bolivia for organising this important event – to honor the outstanding contributions of women in diplomacy. I would also like to thank all the speakers for their insightful views on the contribution of women diplomats within the United Nations system.
Women have played a crucial role in the achievements of the Albanian foreign policy. They make up more than 50% of the Foreign Service, and some of the key missions and embassies of Albania are successfully led by women. The participation of women in Albanian foreign service is part of wider efforts in Albania to enhance gender equality and empower women and girls.
During Albania's chairmanship of the OSCE and as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council, the Women, Peace, and Security agenda was one of our main priorities. We strongly believe that putting women and girls at the center of peace and security is a good investment for stronger and more sustainable peace. As a member of the Human Rights Council, Albania is committed to promoting women's rights and gender equality.
Despite the progress, there are still challenges - we must all work together to achieve equality and mainstream diversity and inclusion in our national policies and the United Nations system. This event should serve as an important step to raise awareness, remove barriers, and encourage the participation of women in diplomacy and leadership positions in the UN system.
Thank you.
