Human Rights Council
56th session of the Human Rights Council
18 June to 12 July 2024
Statement delivered during the Interactive Dialogue with the Fact-Finding Mission on Sudan
Geneva, 18 June 2024
Thank you, Mr. President,
Albania thanks the members of the Fact-Finding Mission on Sudan for their first update on the human rights situation in the country.
We express our deepest concern about the deteriorating human rights and humanitarian situation in Sudan. One year on, the armed conflict that broke out in Sudan on 15 April 2023 continues. Since fighting erupted between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and their affiliated forces, thousands of people have lost their lives, 8.6 million have been displaced, 18 million people faced acute food insecurity, including 14 million children, and 24.8 million people were in need. The country is on the brink of a humanitarian catastrophe showing no sign of ending.
Violations of international human rights law and international humanitarian law by all parties to the conflict, including targeting of civilians, sexual violence, and ethnically motivated attacks, have been reported. West Darfur state was the site of some of the worst attacks on civilians and serious violations of international humanitarian law.
The adoption of HRC resolution 54/2, with the broad mandate it granted the Fact-Finding Mission, was welcomed as a milestone for accountability. As impunity is a key driver of cycles of violence in Sudan, facilitating accountability is essential to stop fighting and deter violations.
The Fact-Finding Mission must be allowed to carry out its work and we called of Sudan and neighbouring States to cooperate fully with it and grant it access.
Albania will continue to support the call for a ceasefire, the resumption of humanitarian aid, peace talks, and a sustainable political solution to the conflict.
I Thank you.
