On February 26, 2024, the Hungarian parliament elected the country’s new president and ratified Sweden’s NATO membership protocol. Votes for the only candidate for president, Mr. Tamás Sulyok, were 134 or over two thirds of the total number of deputies, which brought the election of Mr. Sulyok from the first round. The votes in favor of Sweden’s membership in NATO were 188 or 97% of the total number of deputies. After the ratification by the Hungarian parliament, it is expected that Sweden will become in a few days the 32nd member state of the North Atlantic Alliance.
The leaders of diplomatic missions accredited in Hungary were also invited to participate in the parliamentary session on Monday afternoon, who were greeted by Mr. Sulyok during the time when the deputies were choosing the latter’s candidacy by secret ballot. The Monday afternoon session was also attended by the Task Force a.i. Genti Bendo, who also participated in the greeting meeting with Mr. Tamás Sulyok.
