Hungary is a landlocked country in Central Europe with a population of 10 million and an area of 93,030 square kilometers. The official language is Hungarian. The capital and largest city is Budapest.
Hungary is a parliamentary republic.
Diplomatic relations between Albania and Hungary were established on May 23, 1922.
Political dialogue is considered one of the main pillars of bilateral relations. Hungary has used all opportunities to express support for Albania’s European integration and has offered concrete support with expertise in the framework of twinning programs and the Western Balkans Fund. Hungary has shown without any hesitation the will to open accession negotiations between the EU and Albania.
The relations between the two countries have developed and deepened since the 15th century, to continue during the creation of the modern Albanian state and until today. Albanians and Hungarians share a long tradition of friendly and cordial relations, which dates back to the time of the strategic partnership of the alliance between our National Hero, Gjergj Kastrioti Skënderbeu, and the National Hero of Hungary, Janosh Huniadi, and which symbolize and embody the deep roots of close cooperation between our peoples. The shared historical ties continued even after the declaration of independence, when King Zog chose the Hungarian noble Countess Geraldine Apponyi as his future wife.
Both countries have shown high willingness to further intensify their political dialogue through various visits at all levels, including high-level visits, as an essential contribution to strengthening relations between the two countries and further intensifying cooperation in areas of mutual interest. Hungary is one of the first EU member states to ratify the Stabilization and Association Agreement between the EU and Albania. The Hungarian Parliament unanimously ratified the agreement on April 23, 2007. The long and good tradition of friendship and cooperation between our two countries is consolidated. Beyond the historical aspect, the stability of Albania is seen as very important for Hungary. The European integration of the entire Western Balkan region is of great interest to Hungary, being in close and geostrategic proximity to the region.
