The Republic of Albania and Romania established diplomatic relations on December 16, 1913, at the legation level, one year after the declaration of Albania’s Independence. On March 17, 1948, diplomatic relations were re-established at the legation level, while on June 30, 1954, the representation was elevated to the level of embassies.
Romania has a special place in the group of friendly countries of Albania, as the first country to recognize the Independence of Albania, with its continuous contribution to supporting our country, its deep common historical roots and the active role of the Albanian diaspora.
Albania-Rumania bilateral relations are considered very good, with extensive cooperation in almost all areas, based on the “Treaty on Mutual Understanding, Cooperation and Good Neighbourliness’ between Romania and the Republic of Albania”, signed on May 11, 1994 and entered into force on February 11, 1995.
On the framework of Euro-Atlantic integration, they offer very good opportunities for further intensification in the future, in line with European values and with an impact on the continuous improvement of relations in the region. Romania has provided its support to Albania for NATO membership and continues to provide in the EU integration.
There has been a continuous exchange of high-level political visits between the two countries. The year 2024 marked the celebration of the 111th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Albania and Romania. The official visit of the Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs Igli Hasani to Bucharest on 4-5 June 2024, took place in a special context of diplomatic relations, marked by the 30th anniversary of the signing of the Treaty of Understanding, Cooperation and Good Neighbourliness’ between Romania and the Republic of Albania and on the eve of the celebration of the 70th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations at the level of embassies (30 June 1954). During the Minister`s visit, Romania reconfirmed its continuously support on the Albania`s integration process. Even an Action Plan was signed for cooperation between both Ministries of Foreign Affairs, action-plan that will serve as a road-map of cooperation at all levels and departments of the MFAs. by sharing Romanian experience and expertise on different fields during the Albanian process of negotiations with EU.
The main objective of the Embassy’s work is the further intensification of political, economic, and cultural relations between Albania and Romania, especially cooperation in the fields of defence, justice, infrastructure, energy, agriculture, culture, education, and European Integration.
In terms of economic and trade relations, Romania represents an important market for Albania both in terms of investment outflow. Both sides are working to further enrich the legal framework of bilateral cooperation with new cooperation agreements and protocols in areas of mutual interest, such as education, culture, agriculture, energy, health, tourism, etc., in line with the developments and new challenges that our two countries are going through.
