The Man and the Biosphere (MAB) Programme of UNESCO aims to promote a balanced and sustainable relationship between people and nature, by combining biodiversity conservation with the social and economic development of local communities.
Albania actively participates in this programme, considering MAB a key instrument for the long-term protection of natural heritage, the strengthening of scientific research, and the promotion of sustainable development models.
Biosphere Reserves and Their Role
Biosphere Reserves are internationally recognised territories that function as living laboratories for:
- the conservation of biodiversity and natural ecosystems;
- sustainable economic and social development;
- scientific research and environmental monitoring;
- education and public awareness.
They are structured around three core functions: conservation, development, and logistic support (research, education, and knowledge-sharing).
Albania’s Engagement in the MAB Programme
Within the framework of the Man and the Biosphere Programme, Albania has strengthened its cooperation with UNESCO through participation in the World Network of Biosphere Reserves, promoting:
- integrated territorial management;
- the active involvement of local communities;
- the link between science, policymaking, and local development;
- cross-border and regional cooperation.
Representative Examples of Biosphere Reserves
Under the MAB Programme, Albania is represented by biosphere reserves that illustrate both ecological diversity and a sustainable development approach, including, among others:
- The Prespa–Ohrid Biosphere Reserve, a transboundary site reflecting regional cooperation in the protection of aquatic ecosystems and biodiversity, as well as the safeguarding of shared natural and cultural landscapes.
- The Vjosa Valley Biosphere Reserve, recognised for the unique ecosystem of one of Europe’s last free-flowing wild rivers, representing an innovative model that balances nature conservation, scientific research, and the sustainable development of local communities.
Scientific Research and Sustainable Development
Through the MAB Programme, Albania contributes to:
- biodiversity monitoring and climate change observation;
- the development of evidence-based environmental policies;
- the promotion of sustainable practices in agriculture, tourism, and natural resource management.
Biosphere Reserves also serve as spaces for piloting innovative solutions that can be replicated in other regions.
Local Communities and Environmental Education
A core principle of the MAB Programme is the central role of local communities. Albania promotes:
- active community participation in decision-making processes;
- the preservation of traditional knowledge in harmony with nature;
- environmental education and public awareness, particularly among young people.
