On 17 June 2026, Albania was elected to UNESCO’s Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage for the 2026–2030 term.
This election constitutes an important recognition of Albania’s longstanding commitment to the implementation of the 2003 UNESCO Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage, as well as of its active contribution to the promotion and protection of living heritage at both national and international levels.
Albania is proud to have several elements inscribed on UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage Lists, including Albanian Iso-Polyphony, Xhubleta – the skills, craftsmanship and forms of use of the traditional costume, K’cimi of Tropojë, and Transhumance – the seasonal movement of livestock.
Membership in the Committee will enable Albania to contribute directly to the implementation of the 2003 Convention, the evaluation of nominations, and the strengthening of international cooperation for the safeguarding of intangible cultural heritage as a source of identity, cultural diversity, dialogue and sustainable development.
