Speaking from the UN General Assembly Hall, Prof. Evis Sala highlighted Albania’s continued efforts to advance gender equality through justice reform, strengthened legislation, and increased representation of women in decision-making.
“Gender-responsive justice begins with strong laws that guarantee equality and prohibit discrimination, but these rights gain real meaning only when women and girls can rely on institutions that are accessible, accountable, and responsive to their needs,” she stated.
Minister Sala underlined the expansion of mechanisms for access to justice, including the significant growth of the free legal aid system in Albania, where women constitute the majority of beneficiaries, as well as the nationwide functioning of the coordinated referral mechanism for addressing gender-based violence.
At the same time, she acknowledged that justice reform has also brought transitional challenges, including prolonged judicial procedures and the reorganization of courts, stressing that ensuring inclusive access to justice—particularly for women in rural areas and those in vulnerable situations—remains a priority.
“As Albania advances on its European path, ensuring that the justice and governance system serves women and men equally will remain at the core of our democratic development,” Minister Sala concluded.
Albania will continue strengthening the implementation of reforms by enhancing institutional capacities, promoting legal education, and maintaining close cooperation with international partners, including UN agencies and civil society organizations.
