Remarks by DPR Albana Dautllari at the Security Council meeting on the DPRK

Thank you, Mr. President,

Thank you ASG Khiari for the briefing and we welcome the Republic of Korea and Japan to this meeting.

Albania strongly condemns the DPRK’s long range ballistic missile launch, which overflew Japan on October 3rd, and seven other ballistic missile launches since September 25th.

This is unacceptable. Last time that we saw the DPRK engage in such behavior was in 2017, and at that time the council came together united and took action to hold DPRK accountable.

Now is again the moment for this Council to act responsibly and accordingly, to respond to the immediate threats coming from DPRK and are threating the stability of the Korean Peninsula, and the wider region.

DPRK must withdraw immediately from these provocative and dangerous actions.

With the recent launches, DPRK has not only violated all the Security Council resolutions but has further continued undermining the international rule-based order.

Therefore the Security Council must stand up and speak with one voice, in denouncing the behavior of the DPRK, but also in holding the Kim Yong regime accountable for directly threatening the Japanese people and the whole Korean peninsula. At this point, nobody can complain that the people of DPRK are suffering the consequences of a severe sanction regime. The only responsible for the suffering of the people of DPRK is the attitude of their regime. We must use all the tools and the power that our mandate provides us with, to give a strong message to the DPRK regime.

The DPRK must have understood by now, that they will not be rewarded for their reckless behaviour. The sanctions on DPRK must be fully implemented and every breach of the sanctions is an increased threat to the regional and international peace, an opportunity for DPRK to empower its WMD and ballistic missiles programme.

Mr. President,

Let me conclude by reiterating our call on DPRK, to leave behind its provocations, and stop its WMD and ballistic missile and nuclear programmes. The return to the meaningful dialogue and diplomacy is the way forward, and DPRK should understand that this is the only and right way forward.

Thank you
