Acting Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs Gent Cakaj starts his visit to the USA, where he will attend the Meeting of NATO Foreign Ministers, and hold a number of bilateral meetings with US senior representatives and his counterparts from the allied countries.
On the first day of his stay in Washington, Acting Minister Cakaj met Senator Ron Johnson, Chairman of Senate Foreign Relations Subcommittee on Europe and Regional Security Cooperation, and Congressman Lee Zeldin.
In these meetings, the US senior officials and the Acting Minister Cakaj discussed about the recent developments in Albania, and its efforts in the framework of the reforms conducive to the launch of negotiations, and the important role it plays in the Western Balkans.
These meetings also revolved around Albania’s preparations for the OSCE’s rotating Chairmanship in 2020, and its lobbying for a non-permanent seat in the UN Security Council, and its commitments in the framework of the North Atlantic Alliance.
Senator Ron Johnson and Congressman Lee Zeldin appreciated and supported the actions taken by Albania regarding the reforms that will help pave the way for the start of negotiations in June 2019.
The US officials expressed their maximum willingness to support Albania on its path towards European integration, as well as increase bilateral contacts so as to help advance relations between our two countries.
In his meetings with the American lawmakers, Acting Minister Cakaj expressed his thanks for the continuous support the USA have offered and continue to offer to the processes for the consolidation of the institutions and rule of law in Albania.
