Mr President,
I thank SRSG Perthes for his update, the Civil Society briefer, Mr. Ibrahim Mudawi for his insight and we welcome the representative of Sudan to this meeting.
Albania supports UNITAMS and SRSG’s and his team’s continued efforts in supporting Sudan.
Madam President,
Albania is deeply concerned with the dire humanitarian situation in Sudan, which has worsened due the severe flooding. We express our condolences to the victims’ families, and we urge the Sudanese authorities to ensure that all measures are in place to prevent the current situation from further deteriorating.
Humanitarian needs are at a very high level in Sudan and the Sudanese authorities must also provide unfettered humanitarian access to all affected by conflict. Inter-communal violence, in particular in the Blue Nile Region, must stop. Albania stands with the Sudanese people and echoes their call to live safely and with dignity.
In this regard, Albania supports the continued efforts of UNITAMS, AU (African Union), IGAD (Intergovernmental Authority on Development) in creating the conditions which could enable negotiations between the military and civilians. However, we urge the political actors and prominent military figures who have withdrawn from these talks, to go back to the negotiation table and engage in the political process. The critical need for all stakeholders to engage in reaching an agreement and finding a common, comprehensive solution is more urgent than ever.
Madam President,
As we heard no major progress has been made in the implementation of the Juba Peace Agreement.
The worsening security situation in Darfur and the significant outbreaks of violence in the capital and throughout the country concerns us deeply. We condemn in the strongest terms the security force’s extensive and widespread use of violence on protestors.
Albania urges the Sudanese authorities to independently and impartially investigate any allegations of human rights violations and abuses, sexual and gender-based violence, in particular those committed by members of the security forces.
In concluding we applaud the Sudanese Bar Association’s publication of a draft transitional constitution framework document for Sudan. This is a significant initiative to build upon. Moreover, the Sudanese Civil Society has clearly expressed its willingness to be the main character in shaping the future of its country. In this regard, we also encourage the active engagement of women as a right step forward for their meaningful participation in democratic processes.
