Acting Minister Cakaj welcomes his Hungarian counterpart

The Acting Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs, Gent Cakaj, welcomed the Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Commerce, Pèter Szijjártó, in his official visit. The meeting, which took place in extraordinary circumstances and in strict security measures, due to the situation caused by COVID-19, focused on some very important issues.

The advancement of the bilateral political agenda, the European path of Albania, the Hungary’s support for the reconstruction after the earthquake, as well as the concrete cooperation on the fight against COVID-19, were the topics discussed in the meeting.
To support Albania in its fight against COVID-19, Hungary donated 100.000 masks and 5000 medical protective uniforms, aiming to strengthen the capacity of the medical system in the country.
After expressing the gratitude to the Hungarian homologue for the unsparing support, Cakaj stated that in close cooperation and wide solidarity, this war has only one epilogue: the final win over COVID-19.
Furthermore, the homologues also shared the conviction that the EU’s decision to open the negotiations with Albania, though overdue, was the right decision, because not only is this decision important for the deepening of domestic reforms, but also to increase the credibility of the European Union in the region.
“Albania has achieved tangible and sustainable results in all the main areas identified in the March 2018 Council Conclusions”- Cakaj said in his remarks.
Also, the Head of Albanian Diplomacy ensured that in spite of the current situation, Albania is prepared and ready to fulfill all the political and technical tasks, which are required to further advance the negotiation process, starting from the First Intergovernmental Conference and onward.
The homologues, during the meeting, discussed also the Albania-Hungary Joint Economic Commission, which is expected to be held as soon as the situation is more favorable, as an incentive for further deepening of the economic cooperation between the two countries.
