The Hague, April 2, 2024 – At the Conference on the Accountability in Ukraine held in Hague, Netherlands, Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs Igli Hasani emphasized that Russia must be held accountable and must pay for the economic damages and suffering of the innocent civilians in Ukraine.
” Allowing Russia to escape accountability would send a message of tolerance to dictators and rogue regimes all over the world that rules and laws can be broken with no consequence.” Minister Hasani emphasized.
According to him, the creation of the Register of Damage caused by the Russian aggression is an important step in the establishment of an International Compensation Mechanism.
“Albania supports the efforts of the Council of Europe to lead the process of the seizure of Russian state assets and use said assets to support the reconstruction of Ukraine.’’
Albania supports the joint political declaration of this conference. We firmly believe that the accountability process should go hand in hand with efforts to achieve peace in Ukraine.
The ministerial meeting was co-chaired by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Netherlands, Hanke Bruins Slot, and the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, Dmytro Kuleba, with the participation of the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court, Karim Khan, with whom Minister Hasani held a meeting.
“The Restoring Justice in Ukraine” conference was the first ministerial meeting of the Accountability Dialogue Group for Ukraine, which includes Albania. It provides an opportunity to present efforts, including the allocation of funds for bilateral support, as well as the thoughts of countries and international partners on how they will ensure accountability for Ukraine.
