Albania was the only country in Europe that had more Jews after the WWII then before, there were 3,750 Jewish citizens after World War II in Albania. This was stated by Prime Minister Edi Rama at the International Forum on Holocaust Remembrance and the Fight against Anti-Semitism in Malmo, Sweden.
During his speech, PM Rama published the data of the latest study of the Academy of Sciences.
We are pleased to renew contacts with Yad Vashem through a zoom meeting between Richelle Budd Caplan and Lea Micha and Ines Todhe from the Curricula Agency in Tirana, aiming to intensify ties between them. The focus of the conversation was sharing information on the Yad Vashem ready to print exhibition, "Shoah: How was it Humanly Possible?" is now available in Shqip.
During the meeting with Hamad Amar, a Minister in the Finance Ministry, Ambassador Canaj praised him for his previous role as Chairman of parliamentary group Israel-Albania. At the same time he expressed the importance of the next step, following the signature of the Convention on Avoidance of Double Taxation and fiscal evasion, the ratification in the Knesset.
Another agreement next in line to be finalized with Israeli institutions, remains the MoU in Custom issues, hopefully to be concluded soon.
Ambassador Canaj met today with the Chairman of the Committee of Foreign Affairs& Defense Ram Ben Barack. Their conversation focused in aiming to increase the inter-parliamentary cooperation between our two countries. Ram Ben Barak previously served as deputy director of the Mossad and director general of the Ministry of Intelligence Services and the Ministry of Strategic Affairs.
The Albanian-American Development Foundation (AADF) in collaboration with the Albanian Ministry of Culture organized the International Architectural Design Competition for the building of the Albanian Jewish Museum in the city of Vlorë. The Albanian Jewish Museum will be a museum of small scale considering the location and the specifics of the historical environment where it will be integrated. The significance of the building will be closely related to the museum content and will mark the urban landscape in a very conservative, and at the same time, innovative way.
Albania-Israel Cultural Festival took place during the month of September 2021, bringing together a number of personalities from the fields of academia, history, literature and art.
The first part was an academic conference, which was attended, with original papers and new facts previously unknown to the public, Academician Prof. Dr. Shaban Sinani, Director of the National Historical Museum, Dr. Dorian Koçi, and the Director of the Central Archive of Albania, Prof. As. Ardit Bido.
The Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs, Olta Xhacka, on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the attack on the World Trade Center in New York and the attacks on the Pentagon, stated that the attacks against the USA and the events of September 11, 2001 are one of those events that will be difficult to erase from our collective memory. But above all, September 11 is a day to commemorate and honor the memory of those thousands of innocent lives lost that day and to be more united than ever even in their name, against terrorism and extremism.
Ambassador Canaj attended the World Summit on Counter Terrorism ICTs 20th international Conference which will take part from 10-14 September in Reichman University in Herzliya.
The opening remark were held by prof.Uriel Reichman, Founding President and Chairman of the Board followed by Shabtai Shavit Chairman of the Board of Directors and former Director of the Mossad underlined the importance of counter terrorism as a global challenge.
