Minister of Justice of the Republic of Albania, Mr. Ylli Manjani, paid an offical visit to UK

Invited by the UK Minister of Justice, Mrs. Elizabeth Truss, on 3-4 October 2016, the Minister of Justice of the Republic of Albania, Mr. Ylli Manjani, paid an offical visit to UK in the context of participation to the annual ceremony "Opening of the legal year in England and Wales". This is a historic event that dates back to the middles ages when judges prayed for guidance at the start of the legal term. This occasion remains one of the most celebrated days in the legal calendar of England and Wales.


During his participation to this event, Mr. Manjani had several important bilateral meetings. At the meeting with Sir Oliver Heald, Minister of State in the Ministry of Justice, Mr. Manjani in direct response to the interest of his interlocutor, widely informed on the aspects of the judicial reform in the country, on political support to this reform and on the progress of our country's membership in joining the EU. In relation to strengthening further the cooperation and on the assistance from the British side,  Minister Manjani encouraged the strengthening of existing cooperation between the two countries in the context of intensifying the visits of prosecutors from both countries at very early stages of the investigation, which minimizes the financial costs and maximizes efficiency in handling judicial matters.


Another important meeting, Mr. Manjani held with the Director of the Serious and Organized Crimes at Home Office, Mr. Richard Riley. During the meeting the British side stressed the need to effectively combat organized crime, corruption and trafficking. Mr. Manjani provided information on the work being done in the country, achievements and challenges related to the fight against these phenomena.


Once again, Mr. Manjani expressed readiness to cooperate extensively with the relevant British authorities in strengthening the fight against serious and organized crimes, encouraged to provide an opportunity to the prosecutors to investigate at early stages ,  as well as strengthening cooperation in the context of the establishment of joint investigation teams.


The Albanian side asked for the evaluation of possibilities from the British side to start the process of visa liberalization, especially for certain categories of Albanian passport holders, such as diplomatic, service, students and others.


At the end of the visit, Mr. Manjani paid a visit to Pentonville prison near London, where he met several officials, observed the conditions of detention of some Albanian citizens and discussed the possibility of transferring the sentenced prisoners to the Albanian prisons.  


All the meetings confirmed the existence of the commitment of both sides to strengthen further the cooperation in the future in areas of common interest.
